"In an energy speech last week - Al Gore might have surprised a few people by identifying geothermal energy, along with wind and solar, as the one of the country's most promising alternative energy sources."

-U.S. News & World Report - July 21, 2008

Geothermal Heat Pump

Almost everywhere, the upper 10 feet of Earth's surface maintains a nearly constant temperature between 50 and 60oF (10 and 16oC). A geothermal heat pump system consists of pipes buried in the shallow ground near the building, a heat exchanger, and ductwork into the building. In winter, heat from the relatively warmer ground goes through the heat exchanger into the house. In summer, hot air from the house is pulled through the heat exchanger into the relatively cooler ground. Heat removed during the summer can be used as no-cost energy to heat water.

Of course geothermal heating and air conditioning is better for the environment, but with the recent increases in energy costs you could soon be seeing a significant savings. The efficiency of geothermal heating and air conditioning is approximately 50-65% more than a traditional system and these units typically can last well beyond twenty years! That's as much as twice as long as a standard heat pump system.

Consider that Maryland has extended the Geothermal Heat Pump Grant Program to offer a limited number of grants for eligible systems.

Legacy provides complete installation of geothermal piping including setting the flow center, installing piping to the unit, purging and installing the Dowfrost solution necessary to install a geothermal heat pump. Further, Legacy has completed Charter Plastics training for socket fusion of polyethylene pipe.

If you have questions or have already decided that a geothermal heat pump is the right option for your project contact Legacy Contracting.

Federal Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit

Did you know that you may be able to take up to a $2000 credit of your costs for geothermal heat pump property? . This includes labor costs properly allocable to the onsite preparation, assembly, or original installation of the property and for piping or wiring to interconnect such property to the home.

To qualifiy for the credit, the geothermal heat pump property must meet the requirements of the Energy Star program that are in effect at the time of purchase. The home does not have to be your main home.
